Background:  Staphylococcus aureus is a Grampositive bacterium. In healthy animals, S. aureus colonization of the skin, intestinal tract, or nasopharynx is generally asymptomatic. However, depending on the strain, S. aureus is capable of secreting several exotoxins. Many of these toxins are associated with specific diseases. In cattle, S. aureus causes one of the most common types of chronic mastitis.

Description:  BactoReal® Kit Staphylococcus aureus uses real-time PCR for the detection of the thermonuclease (nuc) gene of S. aureus. Our carefully designed primers and probe ensure highest sensitivity and specificity. The kit consists of an assay mix for the detection of the pathogen as well as a positive control and an internal positive control (IPC). To minimize PCR cross-contamination,the reaction mix included contains dUTP and uracil-N glycosylase (UNG).

Assay: Optional - this product is also available as an assay-only format with primers, probe and a positive control, but without reaction mix.

It detects DNA of Staphylococcus aureus by targeting the thermonuclease (nuc) gene using real-time PCR.
S. aureus is a common cause of chronic mastitis in cattle and can be a zoonotic pathogen.
An artificial DNA IPC is added during extraction to check for DNA quality and PCR inhibition, detected in the Cy5 channel.
The analytical sensitivity is 5 DNA copies per PCR; the LoD95 is 30 copies per reaction.
Kits contain PCR mix and controls, while assays only include detection reagents.
