Background:  Swine Influenza is an acute, febrile respiratory disease of swine with high morbidity and low mortality. In the industry it is commonly known as Swine Flu, Hog Flu, and Pig Flu. It is caused by the influenza virus, mainly influenza type A (H1N1), an enveloped virus with single-stranded, segmented RNA with negative polarity as genome. Influenza A virus infects a wide variety of warm-blooded animals including pigs, birds, horses as well as humans.

The infections in swine were initially due to transmission from infected humans, and then subsequently spread through pig-to-pig transmission. Pigs' ability to serve as a ‘mixing vessel’ depends on the presence of both human-adapted and avian-adapted receptor types in their respiratory tract. Further reassortment of previously circulating pig influenza viruses such as those of types A(H1N1), A(H1N2) and A(H3N2) with the, now officially designated A(H1N1)pdm09 influenza virus, is possible.

Description:  ViroReal® Kit SIV is a real-time PCR for the qualitative detection of the of the matrix protein gene of the influenza A virus of warm-blooded animals including pigs, birds, horses as well as humans. Our carefully designed primers and probes ensure the highest sensitivity and specificity. The kit consists of an assay mix for the detection of the pathogen as well as a positive control and an internal positive control (IPC) system. To minimize PCR cross-contamination, the included reaction mix contains dUTP and uracil-N glycosylase (UNG).

Frequently Asked Questions:

The kit enables qualitative detection of RNA from Swine Influenza A virus by targeting the matrix protein gene using real-time RT-PCR.
SIV causes acute respiratory disease in pigs, leading to high morbidity, economic losses, and potential zoonotic transmission due to its reassortment capacity.
The RNA IPC monitors both RNA extraction and reverse transcription-PCR inhibition, helping to prevent false-negative results.
The kit is validated for nasal swabs, tracheal secretions, nasopharyngeal aspirates, bronchoalveolar lavages, and lung biopsies.
The analytical sensitivity is 10 target copies per reaction with a LoD95 of 10.8 copies per PCR reaction.
BactoReal® , MycoReal® , ParoReal ® and ViroReal® Kits run with the same thermal cycling conditions.
