Background:  Streptococcus suis (S. suis) is a Gram-positive, zoonotic bacterial pathogen of pigs and wild boars. It is associated with fever, sudden deaths, respiratory problems, and pneumonia, meningitis and fertility problems in pig herds, representing a substantial economic burden for the pig industry. Clinical infections are seen mainly in weaned pigs, rarely in suckling and growing pigs. Outbreaks have been reported with co-infections of PPRS and Influenza A virus. Transmission from swine to human is possible, causing mostly bacterial meningitis but also septicemia, endocarditis and arthritis.

Description:  BactoReal® Kit Streptococcus suis is a real-time PCR for the qualitative detection of the fibrinogen binding protein (fbpS) gene of Streptococcus suis. Our carefully designed primers and probe ensure highest sensitivity and specificity. The kit consists of an assay mix for the detection of the pathogen as well as a positive control and an internal positive control (IPC) system. To minimize PCR cross-contamination, the included reaction mix contains dUTP and uracil-N glycosylase (UNG).

PCR platforms: BactoReal® Kit Streptococcus suis was validated with the ABI® 7500 Fast Real-Time PCR System (fast cycle parameters are not supported, Thermo Fisher Scientific), and was also tested with Mx3005P® (Agilent), qTOWER3G (Analytik Jena), MIC instrument (bio molecular systems), LightCycler® 480 II (Roche) and cobas Z 480 Analyzer (Roche). It is also compatible with other real-time PCR instruments which detect and differentiate fluorescence in the FAM and Cy5 channel (e.g. QuantStudio™ 5 / 6 / 7 (Thermo Fisher Scientific)).

Assay: Optional - this product is also available as an assay-only format with primers, probe and a positive control, but without reaction mix.

The kit amplifies the fibrinogen binding protein (fbpS) gene, detected in the FAM channel.
In pigs, S. suis causes meningitis, septicemia, arthritis, pneumonia, and reproductive issues, often with co-infections like PRRS or Influenza A virus.
Pathogen DNA is detected in the FAM channel, and the IPC is detected in the Cy5 channel.
The kit was tested against multiple bacterial species including Enterococcus, Corynebacterium, and other Streptococcus species, with no cross-reactions observed.
