Background:  Rabies is caused by a neurotropic virus of the genus Lyssavirus of the family Rhabdoviridae, and is transmissible to all mammals. As it is transmissible to humans by inoculation or inhalation of infectious virus, all suspected infected material must be handled under the appropriate safety conditions specified by the World Health Organisation (WHO). Previous known genotypes were recently reclassified, and the Lyssavirus genus currently consists of 16 species (Aravan lyssavirus (ARAV), Australian bat lyssavirus (ABLV), Bokeloh bat lyssavirus (BBLV), Duvenhage lyssavirus (DUVV), European bat lyssavirus 1 (EBLV 1), European bat lyssavirus 2 (EBLV 2), Gannoruwa bat lyssavirus (GBLV), Ikoma lyssavirus (IKOV), Irkut lyssavirus (IRKV), Khujand lyssavirus (KHUV), Lagos bat lyssavirus (LBV), Lleida lyssavirus (LLEBV), Mokola lyssavirus (MOKV), Rabies lyssavirus (RABV), Shimoni bat lyssavirus (SHIBV) and the West Caucasian bat lyssavirus (WCBV). All lyssaviruses cause the severe neurotropic disease known as rabies. RABV (genotype 1, RABV-GT-1) is detected worldwide and is the prototype lyssavirus, the remaining species are known as rabies-related lyssaviruses. Human infections are mainly caused by RABV, DUVV, EBLV-1, EBLV-2 and ABLV.

ViroReal® Kit Rabies Virus detects the classical RABV genotype 1 and EBLV genotype 5 & 6. It does not detect LBV genotype 2, MOKV genotype 3, DUVV genotype 4 or ABLV genotype 7.

Description:  ViroRea Kit Rabies Virus is a real-time PCR for the qualitative detection of the nucleoprotein (N) gene of rabies virus. Our carefully designed primers and probes ensure the highest sensitivity and specificity. The kit consists of an assay mix for the detection of the pathogen as well as a positive control and an internal positive control (IPC) system. To minimize PCR cross-contamination, the included reaction mix contains dUTP and uracil-N glycosylase (UNG).

Frequently Asked Questions:

The kit targets the nucleoprotein (N) gene of RABV RNA for specific detection using a probe in the FAM channel.
Rabies virus causes a fatal neurotropic disease in mammals, including humans, and requires strict biosafety precautions during handling.
The RNA IPC ensures RNA extraction and RT-PCR steps function correctly, reducing false-negative results due to technical failure.
Validated platforms include ABI 7500, LightCycler 480 II, Mx3005P, QuantStudio 5/6/7, MIC, qTOWER3G, and cobas z 480.
Primers and probes were verified via sequence analysis to ensure detection of rabies virus and avoid cross-reactivity with related lyssaviruses.
BactoReal®, MycoReal®, ParoReal® and ViroReal® Kits run with the same thermal cycling conditions.
