Background:  The porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome virus (PRRSV) is a single strain, positive-sense RNA virus belonging to the order Nidovirales, family Arteriviridae. PRRS is one of the most economically important diseases of swines and is also known as Blue-Ear Pig Disease. The disease is characterised by reproduction defects and by multifactor respiratory problems. European (EU) lineage PRRSV isolates (Betaarterivirus suid 1, PRRSV type 1; prototype strain is the lelystad virus) are genetically divergent from North American (US) isolates (Betaarterivirus suid 2, PRRSV type 2; prototype strain is the VR-2332), but cause similar clinical symptoms. A great genetic heterogeneity of field isolates is observed and further complicates diagnosis.

Description:  ViroReal® Kit PRRS Virus Type 1 & 2 uses one-step reverse transcription RT real-time PCR for the detection of the open-reading frame 7 including the 3'-untranslated region of both PRRSV lineages - Betaarterivirus suid 1 (PRRSV Type 1, EU) and Betaarterivirus suid 2 (PRRSV Type 2, NA). Our carefully designed primers and probe ensure highest sensitivity and specificity. The kit consists of an assay mix for the detection of the pathogen as well as a positive control and an internal positive control (IPC). Reverse transcription and PCR can be performed in one reaction well.

PCR platforms: ViroReal® Kit PRRS Virus Type 1 & 2 is developed and validated for the Applied Biosystems® 7500 System (Thermo Fisher Scientific), LightCycler® 480 (Roche) and Mx3005P® QPCR System (Agilent), but is also suitable for other real-time PCR instruments.

Assay: Optional - this product is also available as an assay-only format with primers, probe and a positive control, but without reaction mix.

The kit enables qualitative detection of RNA from Porcine Reproductive and Respiratory Syndrome Virus (PRRSV) Type 1 and Type 2 by targeting the ORF7 gene using real-time RT-PCR.
PRRSV is one of the most economically significant swine pathogens, causing reproductive failure and respiratory disease in pigs, with both European (Type 1) and North American (Type 2) strains.
An internal RNA positive control (RNA IPC) is included to monitor RNA extraction and check for PCR inhibition, ensuring test reliability.
Validated sample types include blood, saliva, semen, faeces, nasal secretions, milk, and tissue samples.
The kit detects as few as 12 RNA copies per reaction for PRRSV Type 1 and 20 RNA copies per reaction for Type 2, with LoD95 values of 56 and 35 copies respectively.
