Background:  Middle East Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus (MERS-CoV) is a beta coronavirus causing Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS), a zoonotic and severe respiratory disease in humans. To date, MERS-CoV has only been isolated from dromedary camels and humans. In humans, it was first identified in April 2012. Camels are a likely primary source of the MERS-CoV infection in humans. Oro-nasal samples showed highest prevalence and younger animals show higher virus load.

Description:  ViroReal® Kit MERS-CoV is a real-time PCR for the qualitative detection of the RNA of the nucleocapsid (N) gene of Middle East Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus (MERS-CoV). Our carefully designed primers and probes ensure the highest sensitivity and specificity. The kit consists of an assay mix for the detection of the pathogen as well as a positive control and an internal positive control (IPC) system. To minimize PCR cross-contamination, the included reaction mix contains dUTP and uracil-N glycosylase (UNG).

  • Optimized to handle PCR inhibitors
  • PCR platforms: runs on all established standard real-time PCR platforms
  • Harmonized thermal profiles to run RNA and DNA samples simultaneously
  • Available formats: Kit (with reaction mix) or Assay-only

PCR platforms: ViroReal® Kit was validated with the ABI® 7500 Fast Real-Time PCR System (fast cycle parameters are not supported, Thermo Fisher Scientific), and was also tested with Mx3005P® (Agilent) and LightCycler® 480 II (Roche). It is also compatible with other real-time PCR instruments which detect and differentiate fluorescence in the FAM and Cy5 channel (e.g. qTOWER3G (Analytik Jena), MIC instrument (bio molecular systems), cobas z 480 Analyzer (Roche), and QuantStudio 5 / 6 / 7 (Thermo Fisher Scientific)).

Assay: Optional - this product is also available as an assay-only format with primers, probe and a positive control, but without reaction mix.

Frequently Asked Questions:

The test amplifies the nucleocapsid (N) gene of MERS-CoV RNA and detects amplification in the FAM fluorescence channel.
Transmission from dromedary camels to humans occurs mainly through close contact. Human-to-human transmission is possible, especially in healthcare settings.
The IPC ensures successful RNA extraction and detects potential RT-PCR inhibition, minimizing false-negative results.
The kit is validated for ABI 7500, LightCycler 480 II, Mx3005P, QuantStudio 5/6/7, MIC, qTOWER3G, and cobas z 480 systems.
Use separate workspaces for extraction and amplification, pipette the positive control last, and work with RNase-free consumables and aerosol-resistant pipette tips.
BactoReal® , MycoReal® , ParoReal ® and ViroReal® Kits run with the same thermal cycling conditions.
