Background:  Bovine coronavirus (BCoV) is a member of the genus Coronavirus (Betacoronavirus), family Coronaviridae. The BCoV virion is enveloped and spherical in shape. The genome is a single-stranded, positive-sense RNA molecule. BCoV causes diarrhea in adult cattle (Winter Dysentery) and wild ruminants, as well as enteric and respiratory diseases in calves. Winter Dysentery is characterized by high morbidity (50-100%) and low mortality (1-2%), the highest incidence is between November and April when cattle are kept in close confinement. In calves, morbidity and mortality are high. BCoV has been found in cattle worldwide.

Description:  ViroReal® Kit Bovine Coronavirus is a real-time PCR for the qualitative detection of the nucleocapsid protein gene (N gene) of the BCoV. Our carefully designed primers and probes ensure the highest sensitivity and specificity. The kit consists of an assay mix for the detection of the pathogen as well as a positive control and an internal positive control (IPC) system. To minimize PCR cross-contamination, the included reaction mix contains dUTP and uracil-N glycosylase (UNG).

PCR platforms: ViroReal® Kit Bovine Coronavirus was validated with the ABI® 7500 Fast Real-Time PCR System (fast cycle parameters are not supported, Thermo Fisher Scientific), and was also tested with Mx3005P® (Agilent) and LightCycler® 480 II (Roche). It is also compatible with other real-time PCR instruments which detect and differentiate fluorescence in the FAM and Cy5 channel (e.g. QuantStudio™ 5 / 6 / 7 (Thermo Fisher Scientific), qTOWER3G (Analytik Jena), Mic instrument (bio molecular systems), cobas z 480 Analyzer (Roche)).

Assay: Optional - this product is also available as an assay-only format with primers, probe and a positive control, but without reaction mix.

The test targets the conserved nucleocapsid (N) gene of BCoV RNA, detected via the FAM fluorescence channel.
BCoV infection may cause diarrhea, winter dysentery, respiratory distress, and high morbidity, especially in cold seasons and close confinement.
The RNA IPC confirms successful RNA extraction and checks for reverse transcription and PCR inhibition, reducing risk of false negatives.
Compatible instruments include ABI 7500, LightCycler 480 II, Mx3005P, QuantStudio 5/6/7, MIC, qTOWER3G, and cobas z 480.
Primers and probes were validated against known BCoV strains; the test cross-reacts with PHEV but not with TGEV or PEDV.
BactoReal® , MycoReal® , ParoReal ® and ViroReal® Kits run with the same thermal cycling conditions.
