Background:  Bovine respiratory syncytial virus (BRSV) is an enveloped, non-segmented, single-stranded negative sense ((-)ssRNA) RNA virus that causes respiratory tract infections in cattle. It belongs to the family of Paromyxoviridae. Transmission happens though aerosols or direct contact. It is an important virus in the bovine respiratory disease complex, affecting mostly young beef and dairy cattle. In stressful periods such as transportation or if co-infections are present (which is often the case in RSV infections), severe forms of pneumonia may develop. The RSV disease and the complex leads to remarkable losses. Treatment of co-infections with antibiotics, as well as disease control measurements are indicated.

Description:  ViroReal® Kit BRSV is a real-time PCR for the qualitative detection of the nucleoprotein (N) gene of bovine respiratory syncytial virus (BRSV). Our carefully designed primers and probes ensure the highest sensitivity and specificity. The kit consists of an assay mix for the detection of the pathogen as well as a positive control and an internal positive control (IPC) system. To minimize PCR cross-contamination, the included reaction mix contains dUTP and uracil-N glycosylase (UNG).

PCR platforms: ViroReal® Kit BRSV was validated with the ABI® 7500 Fast Real-Time PCR System (fast cycle parameters are not supported, Thermo Fisher Scientific), and was also tested with Mx3005P® (Agilent) and LightCycler® 480 II (Roche). It is also compatible with other real-time PCR instruments which detect and differentiate fluorescence in the FAM and Cy5 channel (e.g. QuantStudio™ 5 / 6 / 7 (Thermo Fisher Scientific), qTOWER3G (Analytik Jena), Mic instrument (bio molecular systems), cobas z 480 Analyzer (Roche)).

Assay: Optional - this product is also available as an assay-only format with primers, probe and a positive control, but without reaction mix.

The kit amplifies the nucleoprotein (N) gene of BRSV RNA, detected in the FAM fluorescence channel.
BRSV infection causes coughing, nasal discharge, fever, reduced feed intake, and in severe cases pneumonia and death.
The RNA IPC confirms RNA extraction quality and absence of RT-PCR inhibition, reducing the risk of false-negative results.
