Background:  Campylobacter is a Gram-negative bacterium colonizing a broad range of animals. It usually lives in the digestive systems, including poultry, pigs and cattle. It is the most common bacterial food-borne pathogen worldwide causing light to severe diarrhoea. Transmission to humans occurs through contaminated food such as meat, unpasteurised milk, contaminated drinking water, or by contact with cats and dogs suffering from diarrhoea. However, poultry and specifically chicken meat is the main source for human Campylobacter infection. So far 25 species and 8 sub-species have been described. Among these, some show strict host specificity such as Campylobacter rectus for humans or C. mucosalis for pigs. Some species such as C. jejuni subsp. jejuni, C. coli and C. lari are linked to more than one host and have zoonotic potential in avian species.

Description:  BactoReal® Kit Campylobacter spp. is a real-time PCR for the qualitative detection of the 16S rRNA gene of Campylobacter. Our carefully designed primers and probe ensure highest sensitivity and specificity. The kit consists of an assay mix for the detection of the pathogen as well as a positive control and an internal positive control (IPC) system. To minimize PCR cross-contamination, the included reaction mix contains dUTP and uracil-N glycosylase (UNG).

  • Harmonized thermal profiles to run RNA and DNA samples simultaneously
  • Available formats: Kit (with reaction mix) or Assay-only

PCR platforms: BactoReal® Kit Campylobacter spp. was validated with the ABI® 7500 Fast Real-Time PCR System (fast cycle parameters are not supported, Thermo Fisher Scientific), and was also tested with Mx3005P® (Agilent), qTOWER3G (Analytik Jena), MIC instrument (bio molecular systems), LightCycler® 480 II (Roche) and cobas Z 480 Analyzer (Roche). It is also compatible with other real-time PCR instruments which detect and differentiate fluorescence in the FAM and Cy5 channel (e.g. QuantStudio 5 / 6 / 7 (Thermo Fisher Scientific)).

Assay: Optional - this product is also available as an assay-only format with primers, probe and a positive control, but without reaction mix.

Frequently Asked Questions:

The kit detects a broad range of Campylobacter species by amplifying the 16S rRNA gene.
Transmission occurs mainly via contaminated poultry meat, but also through unpasteurized milk, drinking water, or contact with infected animals.
The internal DNA positive control ensures validity of the extraction and PCR process, reducing the risk of false-negative results.
The limit of detection is approximately 77 DNA copies per PCR reaction, ensuring sensitive detection of Campylobacter.
The kit has been validated on ABI 7500, LightCycler 480 II, and Mx3005P, and is compatible with other instruments detecting FAM and Cy5 channels.
BactoReal® , MycoReal® , ParoReal ® and ViroReal® Kits run with the same thermal cycling conditions.
