Background:  Bovine coronavirus (BCoV) is a member of the genus Coronavirus (Betacoronavirus), family Coronaviridae. The BCoV virion is enveloped and spherical in shape. The genome is a single-stranded, positive-sense RNA molecule. BCoV causes diarrhea in adult cattle (Winter Dysentery) and wild ruminants, as well as enteric and respiratory diseases in calves. Winter Dysentery is characterized by high morbidity (50-100%) and low mortality (1-2%). The highest incidence is between November and April when cattle are kept in close confinement. In calves, morbidity and mortality are high. BCoV has been found in cattle worldwide.

Description:  ViroReal® Kit Bovine Coronavirus uses one-step reverse transcription RT real-time PCR for the detection of the nucleocapsid protein gene (N gene) of the BCoV. Our carefully designed primers and probe ensure highest sensitivity and specificity. The kit consists of an assay mix for the detection of the pathogen as well as a positive control and an internal positive control (IPC). Reverse transcription and PCR can be performed in one reaction well.

The assay qualitatively detects RNA of Bovine Coronavirus (BCoV) by targeting the nucleocapsid (N) gene.
The assay is validated for RNA extracted from nasal swabs and fecal samples from cattle.
An artificial RNA internal positive control (IPC) is added during extraction and detected in the Cy5 channel to monitor extraction success and RT-PCR inhibition.
The analytical sensitivity is 10 RNA copies per PCR, with a limit of detection (LoD95%) of 26 copies per reaction.
The assay contains only detection reagents and requires an external PCR mix, while the kit provides a complete reagent set including PCR mix and water.
