Background:  Pepper mild mottle virus (PMMoV) is a highly stable, positive-sense single-stranded RNA plant virus belonging to the Tobamovirus genus. Due to its high prevalence in human feces following the consumption of pepper-derived foods, PMMoV is consistently detected in domestic wastewater and environmental waters. Its exceptional environmental persistence and resistance to conventional water treatment processes make it a valuable molecular indicator of fecal contamination. In PCR-based analyses, PMMoV is commonly used as an endogenous viral marker to assess sample quality, normalize viral concentrations, and evaluate the efficiency of wastewater surveillance. Its widespread occurrence and relatively stable concentrations in sewage support its use as a reference target in wastewater-based epidemiology, including the monitoring of human viral pathogens.

PCR platforms: ViroReal^® Pepper mild mottle virus was validated with the ABI^® 7500 Fast Real-Time PCR System (fast cycle parameters are not supported, Thermo Fisher Scientific) and QuantStudio™ 5 (Thermo Fisher Scientific)). It is also compatible with other real-time PCR instruments which detect and differentiate fluorescence in FAM and Cy5 channel (e.g., Mx3005P^® (Agilent), qTOWER³G (Analytik Jena), MIC instrument (bio molecular systems), LightCycler^® 480 II (Roche), cobas z 480 Analyzer (Roche), and QuantStudio™ 6 / 7 (Thermo Fisher Scientific)).

Assay: ViroReal^® Pepper mild mottle virus is a real-time PCR for the qualitative detection of the RNA of the Coat Protein gene of the Pepper mild mottle virus. Our carefully designed primers and probes ensure the highest sensitivity and specificity. The Assay consists of an assay mix for the detection of the pathogen as well as a positive control.
